πΎ The Wild Cards League β Rules & Guidelines
π‘ About This League
1
This is a parent-led league β organised by parents, for our children. There is no formal club or governing body behind it.
2
Participation is entirely optional β families join because they want to, and can step back at any time.
3
The league is fun but competitive β we encourage children to try their best while always enjoying the game.
4
Anyone is welcome to join provided they can play with standard yellow tennis balls and have a signed Parent Acknowledgement on file.
π½ The Three Bands
π
Rockets β the top band for advanced players who earned their way up through Blazers
π₯
Blazers β intermediate players who have been promoted from Sparks
β‘
Sparks β all new players start here, full of energy and ready to grow!
π Match Format & Scoring
1
Matches are best of 3 sets.
2
Sets 1 & 2: Normal tennis scoring, but if a set reaches 6 games all, a first to 10 point tie-break is played. First player to reach 10 points wins the tie-break and the set. No need to win by 2 in these tie-breaks.
3
Set 3 (deciding set): Instead of a full third set, a tie-break is played. First to 10 points wins β but you must win by 2 clear points (e.g. 10-8 wins, 10-9 does not β keep playing).
πΎ Match Rules
1
This ladder is for players who can play with standard yellow tennis balls β not foam, red or orange balls.
2
At least one parent or guardian must be physically present at every match for the duration of play.
3
Both players agree on a time β matches should be played within 4 weeks of being assigned. If a match is not played within 4 weeks without a reschedule being agreed, the administrator may record it as a forfeit.
4
Each player brings 3 good condition tennis balls to every match. At the start of the match, both players agree on which balls to use.
5
Both players agree on a court β the cost of court hire is split equally between the two families. Player 1 is the first player listed in the pairings shared via the league WhatsApp group β their family is responsible for booking the court.
6
Both parents or guardians must independently send the result and scores to the administrator after the match. The administrator will record the result once both sides have reported. If families report different scores, the administrator will speak to both families before making a decision β their judgment is then final.
7
Good sportsmanship comes first β always shake hands before and after the match!
βοΈ Handicap Rules
WHY
Handicaps give the lower-band player a head start to keep matches fun and competitive when bands are mismatched.
1
Playing one band up (e.g. Sparks vs Blazers, or Blazers vs Rockets): The lower-band player starts each of the first two sets at 2 games to 0 in their favour (2 to love). In the Set 3 tie-break, they start at 3 points to 0 (3 to love).
2
Playing two bands up (Sparks vs Rockets): The lower-band player starts each of the first two sets at 4 games to 0 in their favour (4 to love). In the Set 3 tie-break, they start at 6 points to 0 (6 to love).
3
Handicaps only apply at the start of each set β from that point on, normal scoring applies.
4
Both players must agree and confirm the handicap before the match starts.
π‘
Handicap rules above can also be applied between same-band opponents if both players and their parents agree before the match starts β this is entirely optional and a great way to keep matches fun and competitive for everyone.
β How Points Work
+5
Every player earns 5 points just for playing β showing up always counts!
+3
The winner earns a bonus 3 points (8pts total for a win, 5pts for a loss).
FOR
A forfeited match gives the forfeiting player 0 points and the opponent 1 point for being ready to participate.
30
Sparks players with 30+ points and at least 3 wins within the band are flagged β¬οΈ Ready and can be promoted to Blazers.
60
Blazers players with 60+ points and at least 3 wins within the band are flagged β¬οΈ Ready and can be promoted to Rockets.
β»οΈ
Points accumulate across seasons throughout the year and reset once at the start of each new year β this gives every player a real chance to build up enough points to move between bands over multiple seasons. If a player is flagged β¬οΈ Ready before the year resets, the administrator will review promotions before resetting points.
ποΈ
The ladder shows position and matches played only β points and detailed stats are kept private by the administrator.
π
Within-band rankings use four tiebreakers in order: β total points, β‘ Win% = wins Γ· matches played, β’ GW = games won (Sets 1 & 2 only), β£ GW% = games won Γ· games played (Sets 1 & 2 only). The Set 3 tiebreak is excluded β it is a match decider only. These factors determine ordering within a band only β parents and players see position and matches played on the ladder, nothing more.
β οΈ No-Show & Forfeit Policy
NO
No-show: If a player cannot attend an arranged match, the absent player's parent or guardian is responsible for the full cost of court hire. The absent family must also contact the other family and the administrator to arrange a reschedule. A match may only be rescheduled once per season due to a no-show. A second no-show by the same player results in an automatic forfeit.
FOR
Forfeit: A forfeited match (for any reason β second no-show, withdrawal, or conduct) results in 0 points for the forfeiting player and 1 point for the opponent (for being ready to participate).
WD
Withdrawal: If a player needs to step back from the league mid-season, please let the administrator know. Their remaining matches will be cancelled β we completely understand, life is busy and things come up.
π€ Sportsmanship & Conduct
π§
We want every child to feel welcome, respected, and safe. From the children, we ask for basic sportsmanship β shake hands before and after every match, accept line calls graciously, and treat your opponent the way you would want to be treated.
1st
If a child behaves in a way that does not reflect these values, the administrator will speak with the family. The match result stands.
2nd
If it happens again, the child may be asked to sit out the next season. They are welcome to rejoin after that.
From parents, we ask for the same. If a parent's conduct β at a match, in the WhatsApp group, or anywhere else β is making things unpleasant for others, the administrator reserves the right to ask that family to step back.
π€²
If a disagreement arises between two families, please reach out to the administrator before things escalate. We are all adults and good role models for our children β the administrator will listen to both sides and do their best to find a fair and empathetic resolution.
πΈ
Photography and filming is a normal part of family life β we simply ask that you are mindful of other children in the frame and check with other families before sharing images or videos on social media.
β οΈ
Conduct concerns should be raised with the administrator as soon as possible after the match β the administrator will always try to handle things fairly and with everyone's best interests at heart.
π Season Length & Administration
π
Each season is intended to run over a calendar month. The administrator reserves the right to extend the season to allow for school term breaks, public holidays, or any other reasonable circumstances. The start and end dates for each season will be confirmed via the league WhatsApp group.
βοΈ
To contact the administrator, please message via the league WhatsApp group.
π€
The administrator reserves the right to nominate a second administrator if they are unable to fulfil their duties. Families will be notified of any change.
π
To join the player pool, families need to have a signed Parent Acknowledgement on file β it's a short, friendly document, and we just want everyone to be on the same page before we get started!
βΈοΈ
Players can opt in or out of any season before it starts β just let the administrator know. Players who are opted out won't be included in the schedule for that season but keep their band position and points.
